Retirement of Julia Segaran

International Office staff member Julia Segaran The International Office farewelled Ms Julia Segaran on 29 June after 16 years of devoted service to international students and international agents. Julia will be greatly missed, especially among those who met with her on her regular visits to China, Malaysia and Vietnam. The International Office expects to have a new face among the marketing team soon, and we will let you know more about this in due course.

International Office staff profile: Eliza Chui

International Office staff member Eliza Chui In this issue we profile Eliza Chui, Deputy Director of the International Office. With over twenty years of experience in university administration, Eliza finds her portfolio in international education to be one of the most interesting and rewarding. Her involvement in international marketing and admission dated back to the late 1980s during the deregulation of education to international students. Her current responsibilities include overseeing the admission operations and developing marketing plans and strategies for designated markets. The people-to-people aspect of the job is what she enjoys most. Another satisfying aspect is to realise and appreciate the differences that a quality education will make to the future of those students, their families and countries as well as the goodwill built between Australia and the rest of the world.

Her previous roles in five universities in three different countries included faculty administration, HR management, executive support to Vice-Chancellor, donations and external affairs, student administration, secretariat management, Freedom of Information and copyright compliances, and research policy and performance analysis. Professional highlights include being the recipient of the Vice-Chancellor's Award for General Staff for outstanding service as the Academic Board Secretary; selection for a Commonwealth Government secondment to serve on two Quality Review Teams for the quality audit of four Australian universities; and appointment as a member on the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (AVCC) Publications Expert Group for research publications audit. Eliza was a speaker at the AVCC International Education Conference in 2006.

Eliza holds the degrees of Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) and Master of Educational Administration. Having grown up in movie studios, Eliza loves all sorts of movies (except the B/ C grade Hollywood productions) from Truffaut to Johnnie To. Quite belatedly, she has caught on the Hallyu wave and is now discovering the fun in K-, J-, and T-drama.
