Postgraduate Entry Requirements

Postgraduate Coursework Entry Requirements

Entry to postgraduate coursework programs as a minimum requires a Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification from an approved institution as a qualification for entry. Some of the graduate certificates and graduate diplomas that are offered may be accepted as qualifying work for entry to a Masters program, or as professional qualifications in their own right. For further information, please download:

Postgraduate Research Entry Requirements

Entry to most postgraduate research programs requires an Australian university Honours degree (first or second class) or the equivalent from an approved overseas university. Australian Honours programs are usually of 4 years duration and include a substantial research component. Applicants will need to demonstrate that their qualifications contain an equivalent level of research experience. Some departments may require students to enrol as a candidate for a Masters degree in the first instance, with the possibility of transferring or upgrading to a PhD at a later date if progress is deemed to be satisfactory.

All research projects conducted as part of these academic programs require the approval of the appropriate faculty. Details of the various postgraduate academic programs are available in the University of Adelaide Calendar.

English Language Entry Requirements for Undergraduate Entry

The University's preferred accredited English language tests are:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - Academic Test

TOEFL - internet based and paper based

Pearson Test of English - Academic

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

but the University may accept other evidence of proficiency in English in individual cases. Please note: the University's Minimum English Language Requirements are under review.

All international applicants undertaking an Australian year 12 program are required to achieve a Pass grade or above in one of the approved English as a Second Language or English Language subjects.  Satisfactory completion of one of these subjects ensures that each international applicant meets the minimum English language proficiency requirements of the University of Adelaide.

Students without the required level of English will need to satisfactorily complete an intensive program of English language before being admitted to the University of Adelaide. The University can arrange an appropriate English language program, Academic English (PEP Pathway) in Adelaide at the English Language Centre. The PEP Pathway provides an alternative entry pathway for prospective students who have received offers to the University of Adelaide conditional upon English proficiency. On successful completion of the PEP Pathway at the appropriate level, students are granted direct entry into the University. See PEP Pathway entry requirements for more information.
