Visa Requirements
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires all international students on student visas and their families (on 'dependant' visas) to pay for health insurance during their stay in Australia. This insurance is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
As part of your Response to Offer of Admission, you will have been given the option to include payment for Overseas Student Health Cover. Choosing this option will provide you with cover for the duration of your student visa. If you have requested the University of Adelaide to organize OSHC on your behalf, you will receive your Worldcare OSHC card from the University, on arrival in Adelaide.
If you have chosen to organize your OSHC with another insurance provider, you will need to contact that insurer directly. If you have chosen another provider please remember that it is a condition of your student visa that you maintain current OSHC for the duration of your visa. You must pay for, and provide proof of OSHC for the visa duration to the University before your student visa can be issued.
Visa Length Cover
The University of Adelaide must ensure that international students successfully comply with the DIAC student visa condition requiring them to maintain personal health insurance cover (Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC) for the full length of their student visa. Visa length varies and is slightly longer than the length of a student's program.
Special arrangements for OSHC apply to AusAID students, and to students from Norway and Sweden; please see information below.
Student Health Cover for AusAID Students
If you are a student sponsored by AusAID, you will not need to pay the OSHC yourself. You will, however, need to provide proof that AusAID supports your application.
Student Health Cover for Students from Norway and Sweden
Students applying from Norway and most Swedes do not need to obtain OSHC because the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care has advised that these countries have a national health scheme or other arrangements that provide acceptable health insurance for them while they are overseas.
For the OSHC requirement to be waived, Norwegian students should have documentation proving that they are covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme. Swedish students should have proof that they have insurance provided either by CSN (the Swedish National Board of Student Aid) or by Kammarkollegiet.
OSHC is available to Norwegian and Swedish nationals if they require it.
The University of Adelaide currently facilitates OSHC with OSHC Worldcare. Click here to visit the OSHC Worldcare web site.
Student Accident Insurance
The University subscribes to an insurance scheme which covers University-related activities for all students. This covers both undergraduate and postgraduate students for campus-related accidents, field trips and injuries sustained during University-related sporting activities.
Health Services After Arrival
Students are able to access a wide range of health services, including an on-campus service, after arrival. For detailed information about the available options, please visit the health services section of the website.
