Course Requirements

Managing your enrolment

From 1 July 2007, changes to the National Code 2007 will take effect. The National Code 2007 is part of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS). Student visa holders must ensure that their enrolment will enable them to complete their academic program within the duration of their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Your CoE duration is created based on a 12 unit load per semester or 9 unit load per trimester. Therefore you need to plan your enrolment based on this fulltime load requirement to ensure that you complete your program within the CoE duration.

In managing your enrolment it maybe possible to enrol in distance or external courses at the University or another University. Not all programs offer distance mode courses or cross institutional enrolment. You should speak to a course advisor in your Faculty or School to determine if either option is available. If you are able to enrol in courses offered in a distance mode you must ensure that you are enrolled in at least one face-to-face course in each enrolment period (where you attend lectures, seminars, practicals or tutorials). Students are permitted to complete no more than 25% of their total program in distance mode.

If you have not maintained a 100% study load you might not complete your program within the duration specified in your CoE. If you don't complete your program within the duration specified in your CoE, your visa can only be extended as a result of:

• Compassionate or compelling circumstances e.g. illness supported by a medical certificate stating that you were unable to attend classes
• The University implementing an academic intervention strategy because you were at risk of not making satisfactory academic progress
• You were granted an approved deferment or suspension of studies

If you are currently under loaded, please contact a course advisor in your Faculty or School to determine how you can plan your study load to ensure that you complete your program within the duration of your CoE.

You can easily check on your major ESOS and visa requirements through the checklists and FAQs available on the University’s ESOS information for international students’ site here.

Attending scheduled classes

Students are required to attend at least 80% of all classes scheduled for their program in every teaching semester. Attendance in some courses is monitored and where students attend less than 80% of scheduled classes they will be reported to DIAC. Even where attendance is not monitored systematically, students are still obliged to attend classes. If the University becomes aware that the student cannot meet the 80% requirement, they will still be reported to DIAC.

Making satisfactory academic progress

Students are required to make satisfactory progress toward their program. The definition of 'satisfactory' differs between programs, so you should familiarise yourself with the Review of Academic Progress Policy relevant to your program. All the policies are available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies. Any student who is identified as not making satisfactory progress will have the opportunity to explain the reasons why they have not been performing well. However, if the explanation does not account for the poor performance, a student may be precluded from further studies in their program.
