Extending Your Student Visa

You are able to extend the duration of your study program under a limited number of circumstances (usually due to a change of program OR an extension to the duration of your current program). You will need to apply for a renewal at least four weeks before your visa is due to expire.

If you don't maintain 100% study load you might not complete your program within the duration specified in your CoE. If you don't complete your program within the duration specified in your CoE, your visa can only be extended as a result of:

• Compassionate or compelling circumstances e.g. illness supported by a medical certificate stating that you were unable to attend classes
• The University implementing an academic intervention strategy because you were at risk of not making satisfactory academic progress
• You were granted an approved deferment or suspension of studies

DO NOT LET YOUR STUDENT VISA EXPIRE!

Step1: eCoE
Visit the International Student Centre and pick up or download a 'Request for Visa Renewal Documents' form (pdf 71kB). You will be required to complete and leave/return it at the ISC. You will also need to show your passport, visa and current OSHC card or receipt of membership.

Please note that you must provide proof of a valid OSHC policy for the length of time that you are applying for a visa renewal.

These documents will be photocopied by the Front Counter staff and attached to your request. Once the ISC have received your completed form and all of the documents we will contact your Faculty or School for advice on the new duration for the CoE that you are applying for.

This process is usually completed within 2 to 3 weeks, so make sure that you have applied for your new CoE at least 4 weeks before your visa expiry date.

Step 2: Lodge documents with DIAC
You can lodge your application in person or online. To lodge in person you must complete form 157A, and take it together with your CoE and any other requested supporting documents to the DIAC office noted on your CoE. Your DIAC officer will let you know if you will need to supply any other documents. To lodge your application online you can go to the following link on the DIAC website.

If you are overseas and plan to lodge your application to renew your student visa at an overseas Australian embassy or consulate, please email the ISC.
